Lager, Pilsner & Kolsch

A lager is one of the two main overarching beer types in the world, ales being the other. Lagers have “bottom-fermenting” yeasts, which ferment at the bottom of a fermentation container. Ales have "top-fermenting" yeasts. Easy enough, right? The different types of yeast typically call for different temperatures. Usually, lagers are brewed at cooler temperatures than ales. Pilsner is a type of lager that originated in the Czech Republic when it was a part of the German-speaking Austrian Empire. They tend to be light in colour, ranging from light straw to golden, strong on hops, spicy floral and crisp. Can’t choose between an ale and a lager? Then a Kolsch might be your beer of choice! They are light and drinkable, a fruity beauty!
