Abbey & Trappist
So you thought craft beer was new and hip did you! Monastery and Abbey brewhouses, from different religious orders, have existed across Europe since the Middle Ages. You could say craft brewing is Monkey Business! Trappist beer is brewed by Trappist monks. To qualify as bono fide Trappist/Abbey beer it must be brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery, either by the monks themselves or under their supervision. The brewery must not be focused on sales and the filthy lucre for its own sake. Any profit over and above income needed to cover living expenses of the monks and the maintenance of the buildings and grounds must be donated to charity for social work and to help persons in need. Yep they're too busy singing and brewing, to put anybody down!
